What is FIRST?

FIRST is a multinational non-profit organization that encourages and inspires kids to study and have fun with science, math, engineering, and technology. FIRST operates the FIRST Lego League (FLL), for younger students ages 9-14, Jr. FIRST Lego League (Jr. FLL), for even younger students in grade school, FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), the high school level competition, and the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) a mid-level robotics competition also for high school students.

FIRST's Mission: "To inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership." -www.usfirst.org

FIRST's Vision: "To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders." -Dean Kamen

           What FIRST Promotes

FIRST designs accessible and innovative programs to build knowledge, self-confidence, and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in the fields of science, technology and engineering. Dean Kamen once said, "You have teenagers thinking they're going to make millions as NBA stars when that's not realistic for even 1% of them. Becoming a scientist or engineer is." FIRST' inspires schools and communities to develop a higher appreciation of science and technology and to get more young people to become involved in these fields. Mastering these fields can enrich the lives of all.

         The impact of FIRST

FIRST encourages young people all over the world, their schools, and their communities to deepen their understanding and appreciation for science and technology. FIRST has impacted young people to be encouraged to learn and utilize the factors of producing a robot, to reach out into the community, to speak out for group or individual sponsors, and to have respect for others through gracious proffesionalism.

Many lives have been changed through the impact of FIRST - whether they are college opportunities, a greater knowledge of science and technology, or creative inspiration. Gracious professionalism and sportsmanship on the field is highly important during competition because the competition is sometimes fierce, pressured, and conflicting. These negative energies are discouraged. Instead a very respectful competition is supported. The joy and teamwork of competition gives everyone confidence about FIRST's program. Even adults have the chance to experience the excitement and the passion among young people by mentoring, sponsoring, or even volunteering during these events.

What FIRST has done for us

The Fembots have learned time management, project management, engineering, teamwork, and communication skills due to the FIRST program. Additionally, Fembots build up public speaking skills by giving presentations year-round. The Fembots value the relationships between students and adults encouraged by FIRST. A diverse group of girls with other varied interests have gathered together and become lifelong friends as a result of the FIRST Robotics Challenge. Our team members also gained confidence in themselves by sharing their creative ideas and keeping their mind open. The skills developed during the intense "build" season will empower each of the Fembots in her future careers.
